What is a Confirmat Screw?

A Confirmat screw is a specialized fastener widely used in furniture manufacturing, particularly for assembling flat-pack or modular items like wardrobes, beds, dressers, and sofas. Unlike traditional wood screws, Confirmat screws feature a unique thread design and a cylindrical shoulder beneath the head. They are engineered to create durable, reusable connections in engineered wood materials such as particleboard, MDF, or plywood.

These screws are designed to compress (rather than cut) threads into the material, ensuring a tight grip. This makes them ideal for applications where components may need disassembly and reassembly multiple times without compromising structural integrity.

How to Use Confirmat Screws?

Using Confirmat screws requires precision to maximize their benefits:

1. Pre-drilling: A stepped hole is essential for most Confirmat screws. This involves drilling two concentric holes:

• • A larger-diameter pilot hole at the top to accommodate the screw’s shoulder.
• • A smaller-diameter hole deeper down to guide the screw’s threaded portion.

 A stepped drill bit simplifies this process.

Exception: Short, shoulderless Confirmat screws (used with hinges or drawer slides) may skip the stepped hole.

2. Insertion: Drive the screw into the pre-drilled hole. The threads compress the wood fibers, forming a secure threaded channel.

3. Reusability: Confirmat screws can be removed and reinserted repeatedly into the same hole, as they reuse the original compressed thread path.

Critical Note: Always use the same thread type when replacing a Confirmat screw. Mixing thread types will strip the hole. If damage occurs, repair the hole with a wooden dowel and switch to a standard woodscrew.

Different Types and Sizes of Confirmat Screws

They commonly come in lengths of 40, 50 and 70 millimetres (1.6, 2.0 and 2.8 in), and in shank sizes of 5, 6.3 and 7 millimetres. The most popular sizes confirmat screws include small 6.3x50 mm, medium confirmat screws 7.0x50 mm and larger 7x70 mm screws.
