What are Split Pins Used for?

2024-08-01

Split pins are a common mechanical connection part, also known as spring pins or spring pins. They are usually made of cylindrical metal materials with one or more openings and elasticity.

The main function of the split pin is to fix and connect two or more parts and provide a certain holding force. By inserting the split pin into the hole, it can be firmly locked in position to prevent relative movement or loosening of the parts. At the same time, the opening design makes the split pin have a certain elasticity, which is convenient for disassembly and reconnection.

According to the shape and position of the opening, split pins can be divided into different types, such as B-type split pins, R-type split pins, etc. Each type has different shapes, structures and usage methods. The standard is GB/T91-2000, and the nominal specification range is 0.6~20mm. The commonly used standard split pin specifications are as follows. You can refer to them:

In terms of the installation specifications of the split pin, first of all, it is necessary to ensure that the split pin used has no breakage, cracks, rust, etc. Secondly, the nominal specification of the split pin should be equal to the diameter of the split pin hole. Then, split it from the root to prevent the cotter pin from moving. The cotter pin opening must be symmetrical. After the two legs are split, they must be rolled on the round pin or shaft so that the arc surface of the split part is parallel to the arc surface of the round pin or shaft, and as close to the round pin or shaft as possible, so that the two opening angles are greater than 180°. It is strictly forbidden to use wire or other materials to replace the cotter pin.

The assembly process of the cotter pin also needs attention. When inserting into the cylindrical pin, insert the cotter pin by hand or pliers, and do not drive it in with a hammer. Then use a screwdriver to break the cotter pin apart. The breaking angle is 60° in principle. If it collides with the workpiece, the cotter pin can be rolled up. When opening the cotter pin, pay attention to making the separated parts straight and symmetrical. It is not allowed to have uneven lengths, R-shaped and upper gaps. When fixing the slotted nut, the opening angle of the cotter pin is 60° in principle, and it should be twisted a few times appropriately. However, if there is an obstruction with the surrounding or the insulation distance is insufficient, the cotter pin should be rolled up.

Split pins are widely used in various mechanical equipment and devices, such as automobiles, furniture, electronic equipment and other fields. Split pins are often used to connect and fix components and adjust positions.
